Anchor/Reporter, NewsChannel 21 at Five, Six, Ten and Eleven

For the past decade, I have called Bend home. For half of that time, I have been working in television, covering the stories that define our community. But to say I took the direct route to my career in journalism, would be false.

In June of 1999, I graduated with honors from Oregon State University. In my hand, I proudly carried a B.S. in Civil Engineering. The path was set, and in a booming construction industry, I had four job offers before I graduated.

After a year of working as a consulting engineer in Portland, I started to wonder if engineering was the right choice. Ultimately, I left engineering for a job in finance that took me to Shanghai, China for a year.

It was in Shanghai that my fascination with journalism began. A U.S. spy plane crash landed on Hainan island in China. I distinctly remember my mother calling, concerned after hearing on the news, that there were anti-American riots in the streets of Shanghai. I answered the phone while waiting in line at McDonald's with some of my Chinese friends. Needless to say, the firsthand view I experienced was far from what was being reported.

After leaving China, my wife’s job in higher education brought us to Bend. I worked for a number of years for various non-profits before earning an opportunity to work in television. I am extremely proud that my first year as a reporter was punctuated with the Society of Professional Journalists Robert Chandler Award (rookie of the year) named for a former publisher of The Bulletin.

In January of 2011, I joined the NewsChannel 21 team as one of the anchors of our Sunrise broadcast, before moving to the evening newscasts in the summer of 2012.

I love my job, and I am proud of the stories I work so hard tell. But I am equally proud to admit, work will always take second place to my family. I met my wife when I was sixteen and we were married in 1999, after graduating college. In 2009, our daughter, Macy Rose McDonald, was born at Saint Charles in Bend. We also have a Labrador mix, Bailey, adopted ten years ago from the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Next on our horizon, another baby on the way. Sometimes around Thanksgiving 2012, the McDonald family will grow by one.
