Deschutes forest pine cones make decorations
BEND, Ore. (AP) — The pine cone business is picking up in the Deschutes National Forest near Bend.
Small collectors and contract workers gather the cones for businesses that use them in Christmas holiday decorations.
The Bulletin reports (http://bit.ly/1ohS3Sy ) a 42-gallon trash bag full of pine cones sells for about $5.
Free permits are available for people who collect a small number of cones for homemade crafts. The national forest also sell permits to people who collect a large number of cones or who want exclusive rights in an area.
