BEND, Ore. -

Four Bend drivers escaped serious injury, though one went to the hospital for evaluation after a crash Sunday on Highway 20E at Hamby Road on Bend?s east side, Deschutes County sheriff?s deputies said.

Bend Fire medics also were dispatched to the scene of the crash around 11:45 a.m., according to a news release from Sgt. Ronny Dozier and Deputy Kyle Joye.

An initial investigation indicated Andrew Dean Hager, 50, was southbound on Hamby Road at the wheel of a 2010 Suzuki SX4 SUV. Deputies said he tried to cross the intersection, into the path of a 2004 Honda Element driven by Mark Tim Johnson, 59.

Trying to avoid a collision, Johnson swerved and his car collided head-on with an eastbound 2004 Buck SUV driven by Rita Ann Harris, 76 Dozier and Joye said. After the two vehicles collided, they struck a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Marni Janae Whitsett, 25, they said.

All four drivers were evaluated by medics on scene and released, though Harris was taken by personal vehicle to St. Charles Medical Center-Bend for evaluation, deputies said.

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing they said, adding that it does not appear alcohol was a factor in the crash. All four drivers were wearing their seat belts, deputies said.

ODOT assisted with traffic control at the scene. The highway?s eastbound lanes were closed for about a half-hour during the investigation. Traffic was reduced to one alternating lane until the crash lane was cleared, deputies said.
