Independence, MO (KCTV) -- A dog abandoned by his owners two months ago in a house now needs a forever home after nearly dying.

The staff at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) in Independence, Mo. have named the 1 1/2-year-old shepherd mix Chance.

The dog was found recently in a house with a few empty bags of food. The dog was severely malnourished and afraid of human contact.

Heartbreakingly, there was a large hole dug in the sheet rock that Chance had dug as he tried in vain to escape.

Neighbors told shelter staffers that the homeowners had moved out two months earlier and no one had been there since then.

Chance has been receiving medical care and love since he was rescued. He was neutered in preparation for being ready for adoption.

Contact the SPCA to learn more about adopting Chance and other animals in need of a loving home.
