NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WFSB) -

A New Haven man was charged with assault and burglary for slashing a man Saturday and stealing his friend's frozen chicken, police said.

Jeremie Jenkins, 23, was arrested after police said they found him running behind a diner.

Police said the victim, Manuel Martinez, 21, had chased Jenkins for stealing from a woman.

The woman explained to police that she dated Jenkins for three days about a month ago and the relationship failed.

Investigators said that Jenkins returned to the woman's home on Adeline Street and became angry with her.

When the woman told Jenkins to leave, he took a DVR, her wallet and a bag of frozen chicken, according to police.

Martinez, who was friends with the woman, pursued Jenkins. That's when officers said the suspect pulled a knife and swung at victim.

Martinez suffered a large laceration to his chest and was found by officers in front of the Columbus House Emergency Shelter on E. T. Grasso Boulevard.

Jenkins was found with blood on him behind the diner, police said.

The wallet, DVR and chicken were found in a nearby dumpster.

Jenkins was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny.
