Testing your blood-sugar (glucose) level is a crucial daily habit for a diabetic. Testing more than one time a day will assist you in preventing the long-term complications of the disease. Diabetics test their blood sugar levels through a drop of blood. In order to draw each blood sample, a diabetic must own some sort of blood glucose meter.

The Basics

When you test your blood sugar level, it is crucial to know your target range. Your doctor can tell you what that range is for you based on age, the severity of the disease and your overall health. For some diabetics it is only necessary to test one time a day. Others may have to test before bed, after exercise, or even after meals.

What Type of Meter is Right for You?

There are many different factors that contribute to what meter a diabetic chooses.

  • Insurance: Some insurance providers will fully cover the cost of your meter. According to the Mayo Clinic, Others may “limit coverage to specific models or limit the total number of test strips allowed.”
  • Cost: Price ranges will vary from meter to meter. There is also a variation in the cost of test strips. Find a deal that works best for you.
  • Use and special features: Some meters will be easier to use than others. Depending on your individual needs, there may be some optional features that become a necessity. Some meters are compact and easy to carry, use a larger font, some can talk, have a backlight, and many even have larger strips, making it easier to draw blood. Choose what works best for you and accommodates your needs.
