James Franco was born on April 19, 1978, in Palo Alto, Cali.
Franco first got involved with acting as a way to overcome shyness. He started acting while attending UCLA.
After leaving UCLA, Franco studied acting at Robert Carnegie’s Playhouse West.
His first big role was as Daniel Desario in the short-lived, but critically acclaimed, “Freaks and Geeks.”
Franco’s popularity grew after he starred in the TNT made-for-television movie “James Dean” in 2001.
In 2002 he played the role on Harry Osborne in “Spider-Man.” He played the role in all three movies in the trilogy.
He starred alongside Robert De Niro in “City By The Sea” in 2002.
He co-starred with Neve Campbell in “The Company” in 2003.
In 2005 he appeared in “The Great Raid” alongside Benjamin Bratt and Joseph Fiennes.
In 2006 he starred in “Tristan + Isolde.”
That same year he also starred in “Annapolis” alongside Jordana Brewster and Tyrese Gibson.
In 2007 he starred alongside Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron in “In the Valley of Elah.”
He starred in “Pineapple Express” in 2008 with Seth Rogan and Gary Cole.
In 2008 he also appeared in “Milk” along with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin.
In 2010 he appeared in “Eat Pray Love.”
He also appeared in “127 Hours” in 2010, where he plays Aron Ralston, a mountain climber who becomes trapped under a boulder while hiking alone.
His performance in “127 Hours” earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.
In 2011 Franco starred in “The Rise of the Planet of the Apes.”
Franco tried his hand at directing and writing with “Sal” in 2011, which tells the story of the final hours of former teen idol Sal Mineo’s life.
Franco opened 2013 with “Oz the Great and Powerful,” where he starred alongside Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz, before starring in “Spring Breakers.”
In 2014 Franco starred in "Palo Alto" with Emma Roberts.
