Dame Judi Dench was born in Yorkshire, England, on Dec. 9, 1934.
She attended school in England, studying at Mount School in York and the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Dench has excelled on stage as well as on screen, winning two Laurence Olivier awards for her work in British theater.
One of her first movies roles was as Miss Humphries in “The Third Secret” in 1964.
In 1968 she appeared in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”
In 1985 she starred in “A Room With a View” alongside Maggie Smith.
Dench was named Dame of Order of the British Empire in 1988.
She starred as “M” in the James Bond thriller “GoldenEye” in 1995. She also appeared in “Tomorrow Never Dies” in 1997, “The World is Not Enough” in 1999 and “Die Another Day” in 2002.
In 1996 she played “Hecuba” in “Hamlet.”
Dench received her first Oscar nomination in 1998 for her role in “Mrs. Brown.”
In 1999 she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “Shakespeare in Love.”
Dench was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars in 2002 for her role in “Iris.”
She appeared in “Pride & Prejudice” in 2005 alongside Keira Knightley and Donald Sutherland.
She was nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards for her role in “Mrs. Henderson Presents” in 2006.
In 2006 she also starred in “Casino Royale” as “M.”
In 2007 she received another Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role in “Notes on a Scandal.”
In 2011 she appeared in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” She also appeared in “J. Edgar” that year.
She appeared in the James Bond, blockbuster hit “Skyfall” in 2012.
In 2014 she starred in “Philomena,” which earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
She was married to Michael Williams for about 30 years before he died in 2001. She has one daughter, Finty Williams. Finty is also an actress, appearing in “Angelina Ballerina” and “Gosford Park.”
