NewsChannel 21's John Hendricks reports on Ashton Eatons big win in the decathlon becoming the worlds greatest athlete.

BEND, Ore. -

Things have begun to settle down a little bit for the Olympic gold medalist and Bend native Ashton Eaton.

He spoke in London Friday on what was going on through his mind during the decathlon.

"There is a lot of learning I had to do within a certain period of time," said Eaton. "Learning from Brian Clay, who came before us."

"During the pole vault, we were the only ones out there -- I mean, the first bars that we made, people were going nuts," said Eaton. "I was like, 'This is great! This is the best decathlon ever!'"

It was the downtime within those two days and 10 events that wore on Eaton as he tried to stay focused on the gold.

"In between each day, when you go home and sleep, it's not exactly sleeping like soundly," he said. "You are always thinking about what you did and what you have to do the next day."

As the competition went on, Eaton's lead narrowed, but then bounced back. He says the crowd of 80,000 thousand fueled his performance.

"When you are doing that in front of them, its kind of like, 'This is worth doing something! This is awesome!" said Eaton.

For the Mountain View High and U of O grad, standing on the podium as the national anthem played Friday was a dream come true, bringing gold back to Central Oregon.

Eaton says he's not done competing. In an interview Friday with Dan Patrick on NBC, he said he's ready to start training for another gold in Rio -- and that, "I don't feel I've reached my peak yet."
