Drivers cited in Terrebonne, La Pine crashes
Two Deschutes County drivers were cited after a pair of crashes Monday evening, one a car-semi collision in Terrebonne and the second a roll-over DUII crash in La Pine that sent the driver to the hospital, sheriff’s deputies said.
Around 5:35 p.m., deputies responded to Highway 97 and B Avenue in Terrebonne on a reported crash involving a small passenger car and a semi truck, said Sgt. Bryan Husband.
Oregon State Police and ODOT also responded to help with traffic control because the crash blocked the southbound lane of the highway, Husband said. Traffic in both directions was detoured onto Smith Rock Way and 11th Street for about 45 minutes, he added.
Deputies investigating the crash determined Rhonda Dodson, 48, of Redmond, was at the wheel of a maroon 1989 Toyota Corolla that was stopped at a stop sign on B Avenue, on the west side of Highway 97.
When she turned onto the highway, Dodson drove directly into the path of a southbound blue 2006 Kenworth semi that was going about 35 mph, Husband said.
The semi driver, Paul Jepson, 52, of California, tried to maneuver around the car, but the Corolla struck the passenger side of the semi, he said.
The crash left the Corolla totaled, needing to be towed from the scene, and caused minor damage to the semi, Husband said. All the involved people had their seat belts on and were unhurt, he added.
Dodson was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device, Husband said, adding that alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash.
Around 6:25 p.m., deputies responded to a reported single-vehicle roll-over crash on La Pine State Recreation Road, about a quarter-mile west of Huntington Road in La Pine, Husband said.
Deejay Leroy, 25, of Bend, the driver of the white 1999 Dodge extended-cab half-ton truck, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was taken by La Pine Fire medics to St. Charles-Bend, where he was reported in good condition Tuesday morning.
Deputies say Leroy had been heading east on La Pine State Rec Road when it left the road on the south shoulder. Leroy then over-corrected and crossed the road, Husband said. His pickup left the north side of the road and rolled, coming to rest on its passenger side about 30 yards north of the road.
The driver had to be pulled out of the rear broken window of the truck, Husband said.
Deputies interviewed other motorists who had stopped to assist, and also collected evidence from the crash scene.
Leroy was contacted at the hospital and cited in lieu of custody on charges of DUII and reckless driving, Husband said.
