BEND, Ore. -

Oregon Adaptive Sports honored injured veterans and their families in a special way this weekend.

The sixth annual "Heroes in Sisters" event started Friday night in Sisters, and ended Sunday on the sunny slopes of Mt. Bachelor.

The event gave our wounded heroes an all expense-paid weekend, which included ski equipment, lessons, meals and two nights of lodging.

Participants say the whole weekend is a very self-empowering experience.

"I'm a veteran -- I was in the Air Force for 20 years. This is a kindness more than I could ever express, and a thank you more than I could ever say," said veteran George Hamilton. "I've been here before, and it means so much to guys who have been in the service."

Hamilton said this is his fourth time participating in the event, and he has grown a passion for skiing.

"I think it's really super that they put this on," said veteran Bill Gray. "Everybody should, if they have an opportunity. You get to do things that you might not ever try."

This is Gray's third time participating in the event.

A total of 23 veterans took advantage of the snow activities this year.
