NewsChannel 21's Mackenzie Wilson reports as the Redmond Area Park and Recreation District opens it's activity center in a new location.

REDMOND, Ore. -

There's a brand new activity center in Redmond, and it's open for business, with basketballs bouncing and iron being pumped.

"The atmosphere is very non-intimidating, and we do meet all fitness levels at the door so it's great," said fitness coordinator Julane Price.

Monday afternoon, workers were putting the final touches on the Redmond Area Park and Rec District Activity Center.

The workout facility used to be in a warehouse on Southeast Jackson Street. Now, settled in on Odem Medo Road, the staff says it's a big upgrade.

"We have more classrooms, so we can offer more programs simultaneously," said Recreation Manager Mike Elam. "Before, when we would have a fitness class, we would have to shut basically the rest of the center down."

The move across town came when the city of Redmond offered the space for a steal.

"One dollar a year," Elam said -- a big drop from the previous rent. That will help the city save for a large recreation center in Redmond, though that's likely years down the road.

The new activity center offers lockers to store your gear and showers to freshen up after working up a sweat.

Fitness instructors are pumped about the low impact classes for seniors and kids were already taking to the tumbling mats on Monday. Coordinators say the bigger facility will allow for more adaptive classes.

"There's a ton of people out there in the community that need those services," said Adaptive Coordinator Deanna Mason. "We're trying to offer those for the entire community."

Memberships vary from hourly rates to 30-day passes. And even if you don't want to workout,, the center can hook you up with some fun activities, like tours of local wineries and breweries.

"We're also going to try and do the Pub Cycle, and just get them out and hopefully meeting people," said Enrichment Program Coordinator Courtney Moran.

The activity center is open Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. until noon and closed on Sundays. Classes are already under way and there's a grand opening this coming weekend. The facility can also be rented out for special events.
