First annual Smith Rock Paint Out draws artists to Terrebonne.

Terrebonne, Ore. -

Among all that hiking and climbing gear at Smith Rock on Saturday was a whole lot of paintbrushes.

It was the first annual Smith Rock Paint Out hosted by the High Desert Art League and Central Oregon Art Station.

About 40 local artists competed in a contest for the best paintings of the dramatic Smith Rock landscape.

The free public event also included art demonstrations and children's art activities.

Organizers used the event as a community outreach, in hopes of getting more people involved in the outdoors and art.

"They (Smith Rock) get the hikers and the rock climbers, but we wanted to share how beautiful it is, and how wonderful it is to be outside and enjoying nature and creating art," said High Desert Art League Spokeswoman Jacqueline Newbold.

Artists competing in the paint-out had four hours to paint, frame and submit up to three paintings.

Redmond artist Michelle Oberg said several hikers and people visiting the park stopped to watch her paint and ask about her work.

"It's a way to get people involved and find out what's in the area," she said. "Hopefully the groups will pull in some artists that didn't even know we existed."

The top 25 paintings will go in an exhibit in the Redmond Airport.
