A car slammed completely into a Pilates studio in Bend's NorthWest Crossing Monday morning, reportedly landing on two people and showering others with glass while a class was in session, witnesses said.
"This could have been very, very serious, but the injurious appear not to be fatal," said Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Derlacki.
Bend firefighters and police rushed to the scene of the crash reported around 10:40 a.m. that left a car in the Peach Pilates studio at 760 NW York Drive, by the NW Mt. Washington Drive/Crossing Drive roundabout.
Deputy Fire Marshal Dan Derlacki said fire and police crews would be on scene for several hours, securing the building and having the car removed.
"The building has sustained structural damage and needs to be shored up prior to removing the car," Derlacki said, adding that police were investigating the cause of the crash.
Roads in the area reopened by about 1:30 p.m.
Witnesses on scene said the car struck two people in a small Pilates class that was under way.
NW Crossing Drive from Mt. Washington to Clearwater will be closed until the car is removed, he said, adding that police and public works are providing traffic control at the scene.
Citing federal patient privacy laws, Derlacki said the fire department cannot comment on injuries. But initial reports from the scene indicated several people were struck by flying glass and treated or examined at the scene, with the driver and perhaps one other person transported to the hospital.
NewsChannel 21's Wanda Moore was on the scene shortly after the crash and will have a full report on NewsChannel 21 at Five and Six.
