Rep. Jason Conger (R - Bend), a member of the House Committee on Healthcare, issued the following statement Friday regarding the announcement of federal waivers for Cover Oregon applicants:
"The relief provided by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services will ensure that Oregonians will be held harmless by the implementation disaster that is Cover Oregon. It's a good thing and I am thankful that the federal government will not punish our citizens because of the failures at Cover Oregon.
"But a lack of transparency and timely information from Governor John Kitzhaber's office wasted our time and our ability to provided real solutions to the Cover Oregon crisis.
"Since the beginning, I've repeatedly requested the Governor provide us direct and timely answers as to what waiver requests he had made and their status. The deafening silence from the Governor's office forced the legislature to waste three hearings debating a waiver question that had already been answered. I think, his failure to respond was irresponsible, especially in this short session. The people of Oregon deserve better."
On behalf of the House Committee on Healthcare, Conger had asked for information from Governor Kitzhaber regarding the specific waivers the Governor had requested from the federal government. The governor's staff would not provide specifics. Click here for copies of the correspondence.
