Crook County Health Department will be honored at the 2013 annual conference of the National Association of County and City Health Officials, a body of peers, for developing and implementing a program that demonstrates exemplary and replicable qualities in response to a local public health need.

Crook County’s essay described the effort completed over the last couple of years working with the City of Prineville, County partners, and community members to improve the safety and accessibility of sidewalks, bike paths, and walking paths in the county.

One such effort was a Health Impact Assessment that provided data to the City of Prineville which assisted in their ability to receive a grant to rehabilitate the bike path along Ochoco Creek.  The department continues working with partners and is committed to creating a healthy and safe environment for everyone in Crook County.

“Our team is very excited and proud to receive NACCHO’s LHD (Local Health Department) of the Year Award.  The award is evidence of our department’s commitment to developing responsive and innovative public health programs that improve the health of local residents,” said Muriel DeLaVergne-Brown, Public Health Director for Crook County.

NACCHO’s LHD of the Year Award recognizes and honors outstanding accomplishments of Local Health Departments across the country for their innovation, creativity and impact on their community.

Crook County Health Department was one of 24 applicants and was chosen as the winner for the small category. Each of the three finalists in the small, medium, and large category showed creativity, innovation, sufficient evidence of outcomes and impact on the community, and collaboration with partners, community and key stakeholders.

This award puts Crook County Health Department into special company—a select group of health departments that exemplify a forward thinking, proactive attitude toward protecting and promoting the health of communities across the nation.
