An Oregon City man was killed when his car went off Hwy. 26 and crashed early Sunday, OSP reported

MADRAS, Ore. -

A driver killed when his car left Highway 26 south of Madras early Sunday, went airborne and landed on its top behind tall bushes was identified Monday by Oregon State Police as a 50-year-old Oregon City man.

Around 7:10 a.m., a resident reported the single-vehicle crash off the south side of Highway 26, in the 3100 block, about a mile south ofthe junction with Highway 97, troopers said.

Arriving OSP and Jefferson County Fire District No. 1 personnel confirmed there was a dead man, identified as Scott Joseph Young, beneath the overturned 1997 Jeep Wrangler.

Updated information indicates Young's Jeep was heading west on Highway 26 near milepost 1 when it traveled onto the right shoulder.

Troopers said he over-corrected and lost control as the SUV crossed the highway, struck a driveway culvert and went airborne over several large bushes.

It came to rest on its top, with Young beneath it, troopers said Monday, adding that he was not wearing his seat belt.

The SUV ended up about 35 yards off the south side of the highway wasn't visible from the road due to the high bushes it came to rest behind.

Troopers said it appeared the crashed SUV was at the scene for several hours. The property resident didn't hear the crash, and only saw the overturned vehicle after getting up in the morning.

OSP troopers from the Madras work site are continuing their investigation in the cause of the crash. Senior Trooper John Russo is the lead investigator.

OSP was assisted at the scene by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, Jefferson County Fire District #1 and EMS, and ODOT.
