Grant to St. Charles Foundation benefits cancer patients
The Oregon Community Foundation has awarded $25,000 to St. Charles Foundation to support people with cancer in Central Oregon.
This grant will fund patient navigation services to people with cancer seeking treatment at St. Charles. A portion of the grant specifically benefits people from Crook County.
Patient navigators provide personal care coordination by guiding a patient diagnosed with cancer through the medical, emotional and educational aspects of cancer treatment. Navigators offer assistance with scheduling appointments, communication with the medical team, connecting with support services and finding available resources. Other navigation services include community outreach, support groups and individual “buddies” and survivorship programming.
Oregon Community Foundation’s grant helps St. Charles Foundation’s Complete Cancer Care Close to Home campaign create an integrated cancer center at the Bend Campus. To date the community has contributed $5.2 million to this campaign toward a $5.7 million goal.
The new cancer center will bring all cancer services under one roof, increasing collaboration among care providers and lowering costs. The facility will allow for a continuum of care that accommodates comprehensive cancer prevention, treatment and recovery services, as well as support groups, complementary therapies and survivorship programs. Patients, families and caregivers will enjoy a peaceful healing garden as a place of quiet contemplation, rest and relaxation. Going through treatment near home, that is equal to or better than care they can receive outside this region, eases the burdens patients often face during treatment and recovery.
This grant was awarded through three funds at Oregon Community Foundation: the Velma Charlene Foster Cancer Research Fund, the Clifford J. Fritz Fund and the Shelk Fund.
