REDMOND, Ore. -

A 34-year-old Redmond man escaped serious injury but faces DUII and other charges after his car slammed into – and partly beneath – the back of a pickup truck at a southwest Redmond intersection late Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The crash occurred just before 5 p.m. at Highway 126 (Highland Avenue) and 35th Street, tying up traffic in the area as the evening commute began.

An investigation found that a black 1995 Ford F350 pickup driven by John Paul Downing was stopped facing east on Highland, waiting to turn left (north) onto 35th, said Officer Robert Duff.

Downing’s truck was struck from behind by a silver 2000 Audi driven by Jeremy Todd Carter, sending the front of the car under the pickup bed, Duff said.

Despite that, and needing to be cut out of the car, Carter only suffered a possible minor injury, according to the officer. The Audi’s air bags deployed, he added.

Carter faces DUII, reckless driving and reckless endangering charges, the officer said.

Duff thanked Redmond firefighters, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and ODOT for assistance at the scene.
