Missing Terrebonne-area woman Carol A. Pepper-Graves

TERREBONNE, Ore. -

A 69-year-old Terrebonne-area woman who walked away from her home Thursday morning and never returned, prompting an expanding search late in the day, was found unhurt in the early evening, nearly 12 hours later.

A Bend police bloodhound had joined the search late Thursday for Carol A. Pepper-Graves, and as the search was under way, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies turned to the public for help in finding her.

About 6:35 p.m., someone called sheriff's dispatch to report he'd seen the woman near a home and irrigation canal in the 1800 block of NW Lower Bridge Way, about a mile northwest of her home. Within minutes, deputies located her and began a medical assessment.

Sheriff's Sgt. Vance Lawrence said she was unhurt, and was soon reunited with friends and family.

Pepper-Graves left her home at the Rustic Ranch Mobile Home Park at 845 N. Hwy. 97 due to a “personal issue,” Lawrence said. She had a minor cut on one of her hands, but there were no known significant medical issues of concern, he added.

Pepper-Graves was describe as about 5-foot-6 and 200 pounds, with gray, neck-length hair, and last was seen wearing a white short-sleeved shirt with a flower pattern and blue pants, Lawrence said.

The woman did not have a cellphone with her, he said, and “was not dressed appropriately for the cooler nighttime weather.”

Lawrence said Pepper-Graves does not know a lot of people in the area.

Sheriff’s deputies and Sheriff’s Search and Rescue crews responded to search and canvas the area, as well as area businesses, with no success, Lawrence said, and a sheriff’s patrol K-9 also tried to track the woman, without success. The Bend police bloodhound was requested by the sheriff’s office as an extra search measure.
