EDDYVILLE, Ore. -

Two people were killed late Sunday morning when their car left a sharp turn on Highway 20 near Eddyville in Lincoln County and left the road, rolling into the Yaquina River on its top, submerged in the water, Oregon State Police reported.

Witnesses were unable to get to the two occupants according to troopers, who withheld the names of the driver, a 21-year-old woman, and her 24-year-old male passenger pending notificaton of families.

OSP, assisted by a Lincoln County-area interagency crash team, is investigating the cause of the crash.

A preliminary investigation indicates a 2000 Chevrolet Impala driven by the woman was eastbound on Highway 20 negotiating a sharp right curve when it began to fishtail. Troopers said the driver lost control, nearly hitting another vehicle, then went off the eastbound shoulder of the highway rolling into the Yaquina River on its top. submerged in the water.

Emergency responders got to the overturned vehicle and found the two occupants unconscious inside. Both were transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis and pronounced dead after arrival.

OSP troopers from the Newport Area Command office, with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist and the Lincoln County-area interagency crash team, are continuing the investigation.

The highway was closed for a brief period, then open to one lane of travel until investigators cleared the scene.
