TACOMA, Wash. -

With limitless ways to celebrate his latest birthday, an 87-year-old man in Washington decided to leap out of a perfectly good airplane, and he took multiple generations of his family with him.

Monty Montgomery, of Tacoma, told KOMO-TV that his skydiving adventure was made all the more special when his daughter, grandson and great-grandchild all joined in his unique birthday wish, to take in the horizon from a free fall before he loses his sight.

According to the TV station, Montgomery suffers from macular degeneration and was told by his doctor eight years ago that he would likely be blind by now. He said he still has vision in his right eye, and could see the smiling faces of his family members as they fell back to earth.

"I've been making a liar out of him for a couple of years," he said.

The former soldier said he was recently reunited with his daughter and her family after a 40-year estrangement, which made this birthday even more exciting.

"One day I don't have a family and the next day I have beaucoups of them," he told KOMO. "I broke down and cried like a baby."

Montgomery said he's not sure what new test of courage he'll come up with for his 88th birthday, but that he has a great-great-grandchild on the way, so his team will be expanding.
