Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin sustained a potential serious injury to his right knee while playing for Russia in a game against Germany on Sunday in the 2014 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship at Minsk Arena.

Ovechkin was hit by Germany forward Marcus Kink and lay on the ice for about two minutes before leaving without putting any pressure on the injured leg. He reportedly left the arena in an ambulance.

The 28-year-old's injury was being evaluated, with the severity not immediately known.

Ovechkin led the NHL with 51 goals this past season, although the Capitals failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007, forcing the franchise to fire head coach Adam Oats and general manager George McPhee.
