Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul is the new president of the National Basketball Players Association, the union announced Wednesday.

After Miami Heat star LeBron James decided not to run for the position, Paul was elected in a vote of membership in the union. He replaces Derek Fisher.

Fisher came under scrutiny and criticism near the end of his term, particularly with the firing of executive director Billy Hunter shortly after the league All-Star Game in February.

Current NBPA vice president and New Orleans Pelicans guard Roger Mason was also a contender for the position, but the union did not announce whether Mason was actually on the ballot for consideration or not. He likely will remain in his vice president role.

Paul is a six-time NBA All-Star and was named to the All-NBA first team this past season.
